Driving in Japan
I wanted to show you all proof that I am really driving in Japan, which isn't quite so horrible. The one thing I hate: parking. However, I am pretty good at maneuvering and have much better spacial awareness than most, so this is definitely a huge advantage. Here in Japan, everyone backs in to the parking spots. This is something I did quite frequently at home, because then you can just pull straight out. (Rachael, you would hate this because you are always go for the pull-through spots.) Many teachers find this horrible because this wasn't something they did in the states.
Parking is a headache because first, it can be a little pricy, and second, often you aren't allowed to park places because when you have a car in Japan you BUY (or rent) the parking spot to store your vehicle. It often is much cheaper to take the subway because parking is expensive, and can quite frankly be a headache. Parking doesn't bother me much because most of the places I go have plenty of parking (parks, Cost-co, Daiso (Japanese dollar store), etc.). Yes, I drove to Cost-co last week and got string cheese and some other things. My friend Jen and I pretty much kept saying to each other, "So...you wanna split this?" Only at Cost-co would you need to split every purchase with a friend because you can't possibly fit 48 string cheeses in your Japanese fridge if you want to eat any other food.
Next, the only other thing to report is that I have been preparing like a crazy person for Mt. Fuji. I would much rather be over prepared so that I won't be crazy sore while vacationing in the Philippines. I have almost accumulated everything I need and planned out most of the details, and most importantly, I am mentally prepared. We have summer school this week for K4 and K5, so things will be busy until vacation next week. Hopefully next time you hear from me I will have made it to the top of Mt. Fuji (and survived the trek back down).
